To many students and families, studying overseas is a very expensive venture. In the past, an overseas education is a glorious thing. People come back with good jobs. But as with monetary inflation, education has also seen a rise in inflation. It used to be the case where a university graduate is a rare talent which companies clamoured over to recruit, but now you just toss a stone and it is likely that the random person you hit has a university degree.

And so, the value of an overseas education has also dropped. Of course, the Ivy League schools and schools of that level still hold high value. When I say studying overseas, generally I mean it in the context of students from non-Western countries as students tend to go to North America, Europe, Australia or Singapore to study. Take Singapore for example, there are many people coming to Singapore to study, yet at the same time there are many Singaporeans going to the US, UK or Australia for studies.
There are a few reasons why people choose to do so. But the 2 main reasons we often hear about are either firstly, the overseas school is better than what their home country could offer and secondly, the students could not make it in their home country and hence has no choice but to go overseas to ‘buy’ a degree.
But what exactly is the purpose of studying overseas now? We have seen people around us, or of friends and relatives complaining that either themselves or their children has spent so much resources for an overseas education, only to come back for a job with a salary that simply cannot cover back the cost of education within the next 10 or 20 years. Entire family’s worth of resources pulled together for the overseas education of a child, only to realise in the end that the yield of investment is ridiculously low.
What is the real objective of overseas education then?
A Ticket
This may sound counter-intuitive, but the primary objective of studying overseas is not to study. Getting a good grades is still important, but it is a good-to-have and not a must-have. We ask ourselves: Why do we study? We study hard so we can get good grades, so we can get good jobs. Why do we want to get good jobs? So we can earn more money. Earning more money legally and morally is the real objective, not getting good grades. Getting good grades is just a process to reach the objective.
The few countries which people go for overseas studies usually have at least 1 or more of the following traits: strong currency, many opportunities, lesser work stress. Compared to the home country, generally the choice of country of study is better in at least 1 of these 3 ways.
By going to that particular country for overseas study, the child or student is using his or her family’s resources to buy a period of time there. The period of time usually consists of 3 years of studies + 1 or 2 years of job visa which accompanies the student upon graduation. That period of time is meant to network, to intern at different companies, to secure jobs in that country and to do anything they can so they could continue to stay in the long term. This should be the primary objective of the student while ensuring he or she is able to keep up with the grades for graduation.
The family gathers their resources to send one person out to explore and pave the way, and upon success, to at least have the choice on whether to bring the whole family over or not.
Exceptions
There are always the rich man’s kid who go overseas for study, to either ‘gain experience’ or simply because they can afford to do so. There is always the government scholar who goes on a scholarship and will eventually return to his home country where a great future awaits him. These are the people who can afford to play around or simply to focus on nothing but their studies. Not the commoner who has no backing and whose family empties out their entire savings to send one kid overseas, only for him to come back in the end for a mediocre job.
In this day and age, where educational inflation is everywhere, an overseas degree does not mean much.
Conclusion
If you or your child is going to study overseas, choose a country wisely in accordance to your character. Are you (or your child) someone who wants to earn big money even if he has to slog it out? Then go for a country with many opportunities and a strong currency (US, Singapore). Are you someone who just wants to sit back and enjoy life while earning sufficiently for daily living? Then go for a country with lesser work stress like Europe or Australia.
Studying overseas is a ticket to buy time for you to gain a foothold in that country you wish to stay in the long term. Once you gained a foothold, you are in a better position to repay your family or to recoup your family’s investment on you far more easily.
