In my previous post I talked about going overseas, and international schools is one of the many very feasible methods to do so. From now on I will try to keep my posts shorter so that it is easier to read. In exchange, I will try to post every week.
Background
The Covid period ushered in a new wave of technology rush. Leveraging on technology during the lockdown has made the running of various operations possible, including working from home. But the true factor for a new technology rush was the advent of ChatGPT. The practical use case of AI after many years of hype has many countries scrambling for the top of the technology tree. In 2017, Vladimir Putin had already said that “Whoever becomes the leader in this (AI) sphere will become the ruler of the world”.
And as countries engage in a mad rush up the technology tree, Science and Mathematics become more critical than ever. Teachers of these subjects become more valuable and in high demand. And this applies to international schools as well. For those with a Science or Math background, you are in demand. For those that are not, international schools do not only teach the Sciences. They also teach History, Geography, Social Studies, Economics, Art, etc. It just means you probably will have a slightly more difficult time getting a job in this sector.
Why International Schools
International schools can solve many of the problems a family man (or woman) may have. Children, salary, mortgage etc.
Firstly, it is a standard practice for international schools to cover the teachers’ accommodation, be it via the school’s own housing compound or an additional allowance for you to rent your own unit. You do not need to spend a single cent out of your salary on rent while overseas. Furthermore, you get to save on meals as lunches are covered.
Secondly, children of teachers enjoy either free or heavily subsidised education in the school. There are many advantages in studying in an international school, including making an extensive network of friends from different countries and various backgrounds, an education system that grooms you not to be a robot but an independent thinker and access to various resources not commonly found in government schools. Many students in international schools are groomed to be next generation leaders with family businesses waiting for them to take over, and the education reflects that. You get to upgrade your children’s education at little or no cost.
Thirdly, you still get a salary as a teacher, which can still be used to pay any existing mortgage. And your house which you are no longer living in can be rented out for additional income. One thing to note: Jobs can generally be separated into 2 categories – those that can more valuable as your experience grows, and those that get less valuable as your age grows. The former includes doctor and teachers, while the latter includes programmers and any job that requires physical labour.
Fourth, it is common for international school teachers to come as a husband-wife pair. If both husband and wife can teach, they can be recruited together. If only one can teach but he or she is valuable enough, it is not rare for the school to specially create another job opening just for the spouse. That is 2 jobs settled at one go.
Conclusion
If you are stuck in a situation without much hope in your own country, consider going out. International school teaching is a very viable and practical way to get started on going overseas. It may require some effort to get started, but it definitely is a viable way. Based on the response I have on this post, I will decide whether to talk more about this or move on to another topic altogether.
