Prices are determined by demand and supply. This is the same for everything that can be transacted, including our labour. How much you are paid for is determined by how rare your network, skills and whatever attributes that can net you money is, which may even include a pretty face.
Most of us are just average humans with average looks and average capabilities. We would like to think we are different, that we are one level higher than the rest. But unfortunately most of us are just average or even mediocre. So what can we do to stand above the rest?
The short answer for us may actually be to go overseas.
For example, as a Singaporean, many of my fellow countrymen are effectively bilingual. Having this skill does not give me a competitive advantage in my own country. But out of Singapore, this skill becomes quite an asset. For the Caucasians, although white privilege is indeed a fact, it does not give them much of a competitive advantage when the whole society is white. Yet when they go to Asian countries, their race itself becomes something people look up to (this does not mean I agree with this phenomenon).
In one’s own country, the skills and attributes one has are simply not that rare. But by going out, one may find that he could be in quite a huge demand because he has what others do not. As you move from a place of high supply to low supply, the price equilibrium shifts accordingly to reflect the market demand.
Of course, I understand the usual concern. I have a family. My children needs to go to school. I have a mortgage to pay off. If one does not wish to move, there will always be reasons for not doing so. But if one truly wants to move, these problems can be overcome. In the next post I will provide a practical solution for the readers’ consideration. Of course it will not apply to everyone 100%, but it is feasible for many.
