Problem Solving In Life

Many people equate doing well academically to doing well in life. This was especially true in the previous generation, because the supply of educated people who can solve higher level problems were low back then. University graduates could handle tasks which require a higher degree of knowledge. However, as society progresses and the supply of graduates increased, the marginal utility of getting a good education drops significantly. In the current era where any student can get into a university, even if it is a third-rate university, this only means that the average quality of a university graduate is simply not comparable to the past. We probably know university graduates with an intelligence on the level of a bacteria. The advent of AI is also adding salt to the wound, replacing many jobs from actors to solicitors. We now have a wave of university graduates who studied hard, walk the ‘right path’, only to find themselves stepping into society with little hopes of finding a decent job to match their academic efforts and achievements.

job problem

Note that I am not saying education is not important. In certain fields such as medicine and aerospace, a proper education is still essential. However, we also need to realise that with modern technology and the average educational level of the citizens, many jobs in the employment market can be done by anyone. Many of us are replaceable, either by a younger person, a cheaper labour or simply by AI.

Working and doing a business has the same underlying concept – to do something which people cannot do, or to do something which people do not want to do. In short, solve a problem for others. The more complex the problem you can solve, the higher your reward. And unfortunately, given the state of things today, the skills people learnt in school is not adequately preparing them for society. The culminating results of all the above factors is the reason students with decently good academic results not being able to achieve anything much in society.

Problem solving in school and problem solving in society has a critical difference – the amount of information available. Science based examination questions such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics etc all share the same restrictions – the examination cannot test you a concept which you were not taught, and that all the information required to solve the problem is given to you. The question itself may be extremely difficult, but it is bound by the 2 principles mentioned above. Arts based subjects such as Economics and languages generally have an overall template to act as a guide when answering the questions. In school, as long as you work hard to understand the concepts and take time to understand the rules for each subject, achieving good results is simply a given.

In actual life, the opposite happens. Whether at work or in personal life, we always have to make sensible decisions without complete information. Our emotions, which frequently acts as a hindrance, affect our logical thinking and decision making. Worst still, that incomplete information we are given are also often times a false representation meant for us to see. Sometimes, we simply fail because of bad luck. And sometimes, we simply fail. Not every failure has a lesson. Sometimes we just fail despite doing our best. We see this in the stock market, when we fall in love and gets into a relationship, when we get retrenched.

Life tests you on problem solving skills based on incomplete information, calculated risk taking, and how you use the resources at hand. Different people have different resources, so no point delving into that. The good thing is, unlike schools, if you fail now, it is not the end. There is still a chance for you to turn things around. Also, you do not need to score full marks all the way. You only need to make a few simple and correct decisions at life’s critical step. Let me quote a few example. Choosing to study well instead of playing too much in school, taking the first job even if it does not pays well, choosing the right person to marry, not making unnecessary big financial commitments such as a car in certain countries, going overseas to a place suitable for you if your home is not conducive for your success. You do not need to do very well in school, nor choose the perfect marriage partner. You just need to do decently well in life’s critical points.

What problem can you solve? What skills do you have that you can apply to? What resources do you have? It is ok to temporarily settle for something just to put food on the table. But you should never stop thinking and trying, never stop being curious, and slowly improve over time. And one day when you look back, you will realise you have come a long way.

In the next article, I will talk about going overseas as a continuation to this.
