Ever since Trump campaigned for his second term, crypto has always been on the table. However, crypto price died down for a while after Trump’s victory in the elections, went for a bull run and die down again now. As usual, when crypto prices fall, all the naysayers are quick to condemn. Today we will look at Trump’s intention for crypto and what I think will be the future for crypto.
The Bretton Woods System
In 1944, the world adopted the Bretton Woods system upon the US’ insistence. The USD will be pegged to gold at $35 per ounce, and the rest of the 43 allied nations who signed the agreement would have their currencies pegged to the USD. This marked the start of USD dominance in the global financial system. However, due to various activities including the Vietnam War, the US incurred a huge amount of debt and decided to print a lot more money than what they should. In short, the US needed to print only a $100 bill, but other countries had to cough out $100 worth of actual goods and services. The US was reaping off other countries blatantly. Eventually, Richard Nixon ended the pegging of USD to gold in 1971. All the USD which other countries had, which was supposed to be worth a certain amount of gold, had eventually became worthless paper. Of course we know that later the US pushed for the petro-dollar, but that is another story for another time.
The Second Coming Of Bretton Woods
Today, we see a similar situation. The US has high debt, a debt so high they could not pay it all off, and many countries are dumping long term US treasuries. But right now, the US treasuries represent a direct convertibility to the USD. If your bond is worth 100 USD, then you can redeem it for 100 USD. Right now the US is pushing for crypto. USDT, USDC, USD1 are all coins pegged to the USD. 1 USD stablecoin can exchange 1 USD.
Now, what happens if the US successfully pushed crypto to the world? You convert all your USD assets to crypto. You, institutions and countries all around the world convert their US treasuries to crypto. Instead of the US oweing you 1 billion USD in treasuries, now they owe you 1 billion USD1 in crypto. The system is likely to work well at first, but in all probably the US will announce that the USD1 will no longer be pegged to USD. Your USD1 becomes worthless just like how USD gradually became useless when it was no longer pegged to gold.
And in this manner, the US can avoid paying almost all of their debt, which people, institutions and countries all over the world used actual goods and services to exchange.
Crypto Fanbase
When Trump was campaigning for presidency, making crypto great again was one of his promises. Trump was not really that interested in crypto, but to attract new monies. The Silicon Valley and the techies they represent, new monies who wants a platform to compete with old money and of course the younger generation. Of course, upon his victory he did not give a damn about crypto, but instead used his presidential powers to maximise his reaping off the crypto world and earned the Trump family a whole ton of money. But as Trump gained a more solid foothold in his presidency, he again slowly pushed out the idea of crypto as the future.
The US midterm elections is coming, and it is about time that Trump remember his fanbase. The crypto world and those who believe in the technology, as well as those looking to use this to overtake the old monies. Trump has to keep his word or risk losing precious votes. By November this year, it is highly likely that the hype and sentiment for crypto will be at another high. And for that to happen, prices of crypto has to be decent, people are making money and ‘everybody’ in the crypto world is happy.
What It Means For Us
You may agree or not agree with the government. You may think a certain policy or idea is stupid. It is ok to think that way. But no matter what you think, never go against the government. The government has resources of the whole country and talent far more capable than us, we only have our individual resources. The government may fail, but going against them has a far higher than proportionate risk. On the other hand, understanding what the government is trying to do, then align your investments according to their plans should allow you a higher probability of succeeding.
Gold has reached an all time high of about 5600 USD per ounce, triggering a flood of gold buying frenzies among the older population as they FOMO. This is usually the trigger for you to do the reverse. If the uncles and aunties on the streets are suddenly investing in something, you know that the time to harvest is about to come. However, with all that bubble from the US stock market and the US government’s full intention to crash them, big monies need to find a place to go to.
Some monies have already flooded into the Hong Kong stock exchange and into China A shares, but there is another place they could also send their money to – crypto. Capital from gold will flow to crypto.
The Risk
Not all altcoins are good for investment as there are too many shitcoins flooding the market, and the money circulating in the crypto economy is not enough to allocate among all of them. While some of the other altcoins supported by Trump to a certain extent may present a reward far higher than Bitcoin and Ethereum, they also represent a risk far higher than both of them.
Crypto itself is a high risk high rewards game, so if one is to enter the game, one should take steps to ensure that they do not lose all their money easily.
Conclusion
Trump 2.0 is pushing hard for crypto, and there may be great opportunities for us to profit from it, but your execution has to be right.
